Today’s Nudge: “Write about a dream you once had that you let go of, and where that led you.” (Inspired by Effy Wild’s Artfully Wild Blog Along.)
So many years ago I wanted to be a teacher. I got a BA in Social Science and, after working for a few years in personnel and banking in NYC, I returned to school to get my teaching certificate. But we moved, then we started a family and then, when I was all set to go back to school once more, we moved again.
By this time, I realized getting that certificate plus a master’s degree was many years away. So I decided to follow my yoga passion and become a yoga instructor instead. After training for that in children’s and mom/baby yoga, I just found it really hard to fill classes and make a living.
Somewhere along the way, I discovered art and art journaling. It seemed connected to yoga – it was a practice, it was a process. It was about showing up and stretching – trying something new. It filled my creative well. It nourished me. I knew I wanted to share this.
So I became an art journaling instructor. I feel like I’ve come full-circle. I combine it with yoga practices of breath and I also combine it with movement from a somatic dance training that I did along with the yoga training. Art and breath and movement are energy and my workshops are about how to create energy and move it around.
I never did get that teaching certificate. I never taught high school social studies, which I wanted to do for decades. I’m still passionate about world events and different cultures, history and geography. But I never got to share that with students. Hopefully, my art is part of all I’ve learned and in expressing myself with paint and words and movement, I’ve tapped into an experience that is universal, that connects and lifts us all.
And, I get to teach it.
